The Anishinabe (Ojibwe) word Atikaki means "country of the caribou". Inaccessible by road, this 4,000 square kilometer park's 1,000 km of interconnected waterways are among the best in North America. The "Shield Country" setting provides incredible scenery including rugged rock outcrops, boreal forests, mirror-glass lakes, and wilderness whitewater comparable to some of the more well-known canoeing rivers. The Bloodvein River, which flows from Red Lake, Ontario through the park and into Lake Winnipeg was designated a Canadian Heritage River acknowledging its significance in terms of human heritage, natural heritage, and recreational value. In addition to the Bloodvein, the Pigeon, Gammon, Dogskin, and Sasaginnigak Rivers also flow through Atikaki. Atikaki Provincial Wilderness Park is accessible only by air and waterways. Located 75 minutes from Winnipeg at Silver Falls along the Winnipeg River, Blue Water Aviation Services Ltd. provides fly-in canoeing packages to the Gammon River, Bloodvein River, Pigeon River, Berens River, and Poplar Rivers. We fly deHavilland Otter, Beech 18, Cessna 185, and Cessna 337 aircraft with float, wheel and ski capabilities.
